Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common sexual problems for men, however, it can still be an uncomfortable topic to discuss even with your doctor. OU Physicians urologists devote their practices exclusively to treating urological conditions, such as erectile dysfunction. They realize that it may be the result of an underlying medical condition, such as:

  • Vascular disease
  • Neurologic disorders
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Other medical conditions, including cancer, hormonal imbalances and penile disorders.

If you are undergoing treatment for a medical condition, that may also interfere with normal erections. Our urologists will conduct a thorough examination to determine the cause and the best course of treatment for you.

Treatment Options

Depending on the severity of the degeneration in the tissues of the penis, our urologists may prescribe the following mode of treatment:

  • Medication -- nearly 80 percent of patients can achieve improvement in erection through medication.
  • External vacuum device -- may be an alternative for men who cannot or do not wish to use drug therapy.
  • Penile implant -- placement of a penile implant can usually be performed in an outpatient setting.
  • Vascular surgery -- penile arterial revascularization is only for men under age 45, with no known risk factors for atherosclerosis. It is designed to keep blood flowing by rerouting it around a blocked or injured penis.
